Hon. Frank Caprio (1936-2025) was an Italian American judge and public figure revered for his compassion and humanity in the courtroom. He was born to Italian immigrants in Providence, Rhode Island and raised in modest circumstances. Caprio earned his bachelor’s degree at Providence College. Later, while employed as a high school teacher, he obtained his law degree from Suffolk University Law School.
He served on the Providence City Council from 1962 to 1968 and entered the legal profession in 1965. During his tenure as chief judge of the Providence Municipal Court (1985 until his retirement in 2003), he became an international name through the televised program Caught in Providence. The show became famous for the showcasing of Caprio’s compassionate and empathetic approach which garnered a large online following. He often credited his judicial philosophy on the values instilled by his Italian-American upbringing.
Caprio was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2023, completing radiation in 2024. Unfortunately, after a health setback, he passed away on August 20, 2025. The enduring power of his legacy lies in its demonstration of balancing justice with empathy, dignity, and understanding.
