Antonin Scalia (1936 – 2016) was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, serving until his death in 2016. Appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1986, Scalia was the first Italian American to serve on the Court and became one of its most influential and intellectually vigorous members.
Known for his sharp wit, powerful writing, and originalist interpretation of the Constitution, Scalia championed the view that the Constitution should be understood according to its original public meaning rather than evolving with societal changes. He was also a staunch textualist in statutory
interpretation, insisting that laws should be applied based on their plain language.
Scalia’s opinions and dissents-often colorful and forceful-shaped modern legal thought and inspired generations of judges, scholars, and lawyers.
